My name is Marilyn Allen; I have been Jail Industry Director at Strafford County Department of Corrections (DOC) for 18 years. Jail Industries is paid work for inmates while incarcerated, as well as assistance at the time of release.
Strafford County believes in pre – and post – release services for the men and women incarcerated at our facility. We believe that good programming and support for inmates increases the likelihood of a successful re-entry into society. As a result the
Family Reception Center has been established for inmates’ families and friends. Over the years I’ve learned that statistics show that family support is a key to success upon release. Families also need support and resources to better equip them to assist their loved ones. Thus came the development of a
Family Reception Center.
The Family Reception Center will strive to provide a comfortable, trusting and supportive environment where inmates’ families and friends may come before and / or after visits to receive validation, support and resources that may lessen the negative impact experienced through incarceration of a loved one.
Goals of the Family Reception Center
- To provide a setting where people experiencing incarceration of a loved one may come to receive support from others experiencing or who have experienced the same situations.
- To provide a more positive and comfortable setting for children wishing to visit.
- To provide caring and knowledgeable persons and relevant materials that may provide families and loved ones with helpful information and resources to improve the situation families face through incarceration of their loved ones.
This mission and these goals are a work in progress and are flexible, based on the needs of the families and the approval of the facility. Like so many other programs at our facility, volunteers are the key to success.
If you are a family member please stop in and visit. Refreshments and children’s play activities are available as well as my business card, a question box, visitor’s handbooks, and legal booklets. Caring volunteers are there to support you.
New volunteers to staff the Family Reception Center are always welcome. Applicants will receive training and guidance. A warm and supportive spirit is the greatest gift of any volunteer. No one will be asked to staff the center without feeling fully comfortable about his / her training. There will always be at least two persons staffing the Family Reception Center at any one time.
