Deputy Sheriff Charles E. Smith Honored at 2009 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

Deputy Charles E. Smith of the Strafford County Sheriff’s Office was honored along with 41 other New Hampshire law enforcement officers who gave their lives in service to the State of New Hampshire during the memorial service held in Concord, N.H. on Friday, May 8, 2009.

Deputy Smith is the first known law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in New Hampshire. He was shot by a horse thief in the Town of Strafford on May 6, 1891 and subsided to the gunshot wound he received on May 23, 1891. He was 47 years of age at the time of his death.

The Strafford County Dispatch Center has a present staffing compliment of one supervisor, one assistant supervisor and seven communications specialists. Additional staffing levels are routinely increased based upon the need for extra coverage for planned special events or in the case of disasters and emergencies, additional personnel are called back through an established emergency recall standard operating procedure.

Deputy Smith’s name was read into the Honorable Roll Call and a flower was placed in the wreath that was placed at the memorial.
